NFL Week 10: It’s like MAGIC!

November 14, 2010

I have to admit that I’m feeling very calm in my picks today. What’s up? Oh, I dunno, going into a BYE week with a WIN can ease your mind a tad. Or at least fool you into thinking that all is right in the universe.

Should we see things suddenly go right in Dallas? Will getting rid of Wade Phillips magically turn the team into winners? Um, I think not. I hear interim coach Jason Garrett is tightening up the screws, trying to get the players to have more accountability. That’s good. Would’ve been better 4 years ago. And is going to take some time.

However, here’s the thing about the term “interim.” It denotes temporary. And how many players that have had sports casting experts (many of them ex-players) call out how they’ve quit on the field are going to take that as an excuse to not work hard to get better? Wade Phillips looked like the kind of coach that gives you a big hug when you screw up not the coached that inspired respect or fear even.

Jason Garrett will have to go a long way, maybe even take a long time to change the lazy ways in Dallas. But if he’s successful in moving Dallas into Wins-ville, I hope he can dial up the SD Special Teams and throw them some hints.

The team that magically has other teams taking notice? The magical silver and black: Da Raiders! As a diehard Charger fan, I hate the Raiders in the way one can only hate a sports rival. But being a sports fan, I hate watching a team look inept (read: Dallas above). So watching the raiders over the last few years has been painful, not cheer inducing. And now, it’s inspiring to see that team start to find it’s legs and turn around. It’s a reminder that magic does happen in the NFL: players change, coaches change, but watching a team “rebuild” is one of the most enjoyable and interesting things in modern day team sports.

Expelliarmus!  Modern-day transformations to keep an eye on: Detroit, Oakland, St Louis.

Stupify! Teams that are still lacking the magic: Buffalo, Seattle, Arizona, San Francisco.

Here’s wishing Liquid Luck to all my picks today!
