NFL Week 6: Worldwide Phenomenon

October 16, 2010

How much do I love the NFL? Enough to be thinking about games while enjoying a business trip to Hyderabad, India. But that doesn’t mean I won’t be investing some time to understand and enjoy that other worldwide sports fascination: cricket. In fact, with another week of pulling .500 and already tired of the Favre investigation, I’m wondering if I might be more successful with cricket matches than football.

One spot of intense disappointment: my Chargers. Yes, I’ll still call them “my.” I’m harkening back to the days when we weren’t talented, we had forgettable coaches, and the most we could look forward to were the AFC West match-ups where we had a fighting chance based on pride. Now, I oh-so-affectionately call them Franken-team. At some point, we might reactivate Louis Kelcher to play.

If it’s not the injuries, it’s the hubris in the front office. Really, guys, what do you gain by making it impossible for Vincent Jackson to go find a new home? I know, you might worry over a sudden resurgence like the one LT seems to be enjoying. Or worry over having to play against him a la what revenge Washington’s McNabb paid over to his former teammates in Philly.

But get over it, AJ and Co. It’s a distraction the team doesn’t need, makes no business sense, and creates bad karma. You should be worrying over a much-improved St Louis team and reflecting on how you have the #1 Offense everywhere on the field until the ball pops out for yet another fumble. Focus on your poor tackling techniques and even worse special teams coverage.

Now, off the soapbox, and onto those picks. Above .500 this week? There’s always hope. Now, let’s see here…
