In the movie Adam, HGF grad Hugh Dancy shows off some mighty acting chops as a lonely man living with Asperger’s who struggles to break out of his isolation when he meets pretty and personable neighbour played by Rose Byrne. The story is familiar but still manages to throw some surprises and the scenes where Adam struggles with his social anxiety are heartbreaking. But it’s hard not to appreciate his efforts to connect with Beth, especially when he risks life and limb to clean her windows in his NASA suit.
But the movie gets a “Check It” from an ending that doesn’t give in to routine romantic comedy nor the pangs of despair that would’ve left a tidy tale of loss.
Seattle’s Egyptian Theatre on Cap Hill is currently showing Adam.
